57 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine the Ohio Senate. Between 1986 and 1987, Mr. Gerhardstein was a research assistant at Bowling Green State University while earning his MPA. Upon the conclusion of his academic endeavors, Mr. Gerhardstein joined Toledo Edison, where he served as an emergency preparedness representative from 1987 to 1991. Returning to Columbus, Ohio, he served the Ohio Department of Administrative Services as a legislative liaison from 1991 to 1993 and, subsequently, at the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio as director of legislative affairs from 1993 to 1995. Mr. Gerhardstein began his 20-year career with Columbia Gas of Ohio, Inc., as director of governmental affairs in 1995. Upon retirement from Columbia Gas in 2015, he formed Capitol Success Consulting. He currently serves as vice chairman of the OhioWater Development Authority. While at Columbia Gas, Mr. Gerhardstein conceived and lobbied for the enactment of many pieces of significant legislation. Chief among them was the enactment of HB 95 (129th General Assembly), which fundamentally changed the regulatory statutes for natural gas utilities in Ohio. Mr. Gerhardstein has served as chairman of the Ohio Gas Association Legislative Committee, as well as chairman of the Ohio Public Expenditures Council. He has served as a board member of the United Conservatives of Ohio and as a member of the Tax and Public Affairs Committees of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a deputy to the Ohio Business Roundtable. In recognition of his success, Mr. Gerhardstein has received a number of accolades. He was inducted into the Bellevue High School Halls of Excellence in 2013 and earned three President’s Awards from Columbia Gas of Ohio in 1999, 2011 and 2015. He was also honored as one of Ohio’s Most Effective Corporate Lobbyist by Opinion Strategies in 2000. Commencing his career in 1974 in the United States Air Force, Sam E. Gerhardstein achieved the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1978. He then attended Bowling Green State University and earned a BA in political science and economics in 1982.
