Doonan recognized her love and passion for collecting items, ranging from seashells to unique footwear that she received at the age of 10 from her uncle, who had worked at Goodwill. This interest culminated in her present role as a historian at the Norfolk Historical Society in her hometown of Norfolk, Virginia, where she has worked since 2011. In her position as a historian, Ms. Doonan is responsible for maintaining the society’s historical collection. She attributes a great deal of her success to her upbringing, having been raised in a family that greatly valued the significance of history and learning from the past. Congruent to her endeavors in historical preservation, Ms. Doonan is a past educator and past real estate agent. Prior to embarking upon her career, she attended East Carolina University, from which she received a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. Subsequently, she earned a Master of Arts from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. After spending many years teaching at Davie County Schools in North Carolina, she earned a real estate license and served as a realtor for Howard Hanna William E. Wood. Among her several career highlights, Ms. Doonan is exceptionally proud of being named as a Who’s Who recipient when she was an undergraduate student at East Carolina University. She also earned the President’s Award from the aforementioned university in light of her success in her field. Likewise, she enjoyed writing a federally funded juvenile program, titled the JUMP (Juveniles Unemployed Making Progress) Program, that was leveraged to assist juvenile offenders. Outside of her primary career endeavors, Ms. Doonan has volunteered at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters while teaching high school students. She has also sat on the board of directors of the Norfolk Historical Society since 2017 and was a member for 30 years and former president for 10 years of the Granby High School Alumnus Association. Furthermore, she is a docent at her local church at Fort Norfolk.
