104 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION was a member of the Oswego Opera Theater, the American Association of University Women, the National Organization for Women, the Oswego County Historical Society and Safe Haven, among many others. To prepare for her career, Dr. Smiley underwent piano and flute lessons in her youth, having perfected the craft by the time she enrolled at Ball State University for her undergraduate studies. Receiving a BS from the institution in 1954, she served as a public school music teacher in Logansport, Indiana, from 1954 to 1961. Concurrently, Dr. Smiley studied at Northwestern University, earning a MusM in 1958, as well as studied under the tutelage of Nadia Boulanger at the Ecoles d’Art Americaines in Fontainebleau, France, in 1959. She also earned a PhD from the University of Illinois in 1970. Dr. Smiley received the 1973 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Joining the State University of New York at Oswego in 1961, Dr. Marilynn J. Smiley served as a faculty member of the music department until attaining emerita status in 2014. During her longstanding tenure at SUNY Oswego, she excelled as chairperson of the music department between 1976 and 1981, as well as a distinguished teaching professor from 1974 to 2014. During her time teaching, Dr. Smiley taught courses on music history, particularly American music and women in music. Additionally, she had pursued research interests in Renaissance and American music, all while contributing scholarly articles to professional journals and giving presentations at conferences and symposia. Alongside her academic path, Dr. Smiley directed and performed with the Oswego Recorder Consortium and researched for the Ontario Singers. Now recognized as a retired musicologist, she maintained membership with a variety of organizations, such as the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, Early Music America and the American Recorder Society.
