189 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY Growing up in a military and medical family, Dr. Richard Douglas Cameron was inspired to enter the fields by his father, who was an Army Air Corps flight surgeon and psychiatrist. Setting the tone for his own career, he followed in his father’s footsteps by receiving a BA from the University of Iowa in 1961 and, subsequently, an MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1965. During his studies, he joined the ROTC and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army in 1964. As his military career advanced, Dr. Cameron ascended the ranks tomajor general by 1989, all while pursuing his interest inmedicine. He was amedical intern at the Brooke Army Medical College and completed a residency at Letterman General Hospital. Thereafter, he became commanding officer for the 98th Medical Detachment and division psychiatrist for the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam. Over the course of his longstanding career, Dr. Cameron was also a psychiatrist and division surgeon in Germany and chief of the medical team in Saudi Arabia. Returning to the United States, he was a commander of the Darnall Army Hospital, commanding general of the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and deputy assistant secretary of defense at the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Likewise, Dr. Cameron excelled as the commanding general at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and at the U.S. Army Health Services Command in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Following several decades of military service, he retired in 1995 following a tenure as the deputy commanding general of the Army Medical Command. Most recently, he was the executive director and senior member of Marcy Health Plans, Inc., from 1995 to 2000. Dr. Cameron earned the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. Regarding his medical career, he is a distinguished fellow of the American College of Physician Executives and earned the 1994 John D. Chase Award from the Department of Defense.
