Dr. Tolentino focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, including such areas as vision loss, detached retinas, cataracts and glaucoma. He has further performed a myriad of procedures, such as laser retina surgery, refractive surgery and lens replacement operations. Recognized as a pioneering figurehead, Dr. Tolentino was integral in developing new surgical techniques in the 1970s and 1980s and lent his expertise to medical texts. A founder of the Asian Eye Institute in the Philippines, Dr. Tolentino was recognized with the 1980 Gusi Peace Prize for his benevolent endeavors in underserved communities, for which he has provided eye services free-of-charge. He also established a charitable organization in the Philippines, which has focused on treating cataract blindness. He earned the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of the Philippines. Drawing upon over 60 years of expertise in medicine, particularly within the area of eye disease, Dr. Felipe I. Tolentino currently excels in several roles. Since 1982 and 1983, respectively, he has been a staff member at Warren Memorial Hospital and Hahnemann Hospital, as well as an associate surgeon at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary since 1983 and an associate scientist at the Eye Research Institute through the Retina Foundation since 1971. Furthermore, Dr. Tolentino has thrived as an associate clinical professor at Harvard Medical School since 1986, where he previously served as a clinical professor in the Department of Ophthalmology from1975 to 1985. Earlier, he served theMassachusetts Eye &Ear Infirmary as an assistant surgeon in ophthalmology from 1980 to 1983. After earning an MD from the University of Philippines School of Medicine in 1957, Dr. Tolentino completed residencies in ophthalmology and fellowships at such clinics as St. Mary’s Hospital inNewYork, Homer G. Philipps Hospital in St. Louis and the Eye Research Institute in Boston. Between 1965 and 1971, he served his alma mater as an instructor, a visiting research ophthalmologist and an assistant professor, having concurrently spent time as an attending surgeon at the Manila Medical Center.
