Under his leadership, the two Colleges at Temple and Old Dominion, and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, have undergone major expansions of their research and educational programs. Dr. Platsoucas is an internationally recognized immunologist and is published extensively on themolecular and cellular immunology of human T cells and their role in the immune response against cancer (melanoma, ovarian carcinoma, breast adenocarcinoma, CLL), autoimmune diseases (systemic sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, aortic aneurysm), and rejection of organ grafts. He holds several patents and has been awarded over $23 million in research and training grants, primarily from NIH. His research is extensively cited in the literature. Dr. Platsoucas has received several awards and recognitions, including honorary doctorates from the University of Thrace and the University of Patras. Born in Athens, Greece, Dr. Chris Platsoucas attended the University of Patras, receiving a BS in 1973. He attended graduate school at Purdue University from 1974 to 1975 and received a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978. He was a research fellow at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and began his longstanding career in academia. He served as assistant member and head of the Laboratory of Biological Response Modifiers at MSKCC, then as associate professor, professor and deputy chair in the Department of Immunology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was also Ashbel Smith Professor and held the Stringer Professorship in Cancer Research. From 1993 to 2006, Dr. Platsoucas was chairperson and L.H. Carnell Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Temple University School of Medicine. He concurrently served as the founding acting dean of the College of Science and Technology at Temple from 1998 to 2000 and as dean from 2000 to 2004.
