231 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Recruiting Station at Fort Omaha, Nebraska, as a general medical officer in 1963, following which he completed a residency in internal medicine from 1964 to 1967 at Philadelphia Naval Hospital. Dr. Mattern served as a staff internist at Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, California, from 1967 to 1969, where he was promoted to lieutenant commander. During that time, he served as director of infectious disease and general medical wards. In 1969, he was selected for a two-year fellowship program in cardiovascular diseases at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Following completion of his training, he was assigned to the cardiology department at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, where he served as director of the coronary care and intensive care units, as well as director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories. He was heavily involved in teaching residents and fellows. During that time, he was also involved in care of prisoners of war released at the end of the Vietnam War. He was further promoted to the rank of commander. In 1974, Dr. Mattern resigned from the regular Navy. He returned his naval career in the Naval Reserves in 1975. Over the next decade, he had assignments in the San Diego area, including medical officer for the Navy Reserve Center, assignments to the USS Tarawa, USS Sperry and the Naval Hospital. In 1980, he moved to Casper, Wyoming, and continued his naval career at the Naval Reserve Center in Denver, where he was promoted to captain. His last assignment was commanding officer of the Naval Reserve Surgical Team 218. After his military retirement, he practiced in California, Nevada and Wyoming as an interventional cardiologist. He also served as governor of the American College of Cardiology in Wyoming. Completing 55 years of practice, he retired from medicine in 2020. Captain Allan L. Mattern entered U.S. Navy service in 1961 in the Ensign 1915 Program in his senior year of medical school at Yale University. After his internship at the University of Utah, he attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, where he was commissioned a lieutenant. He was assigned to the Naval ALLAN L.
