Furthermore, Dr. Althoen is a reviewer for Zentralblatt für Mathematik, an international reviewing service in Berlin, as well as a speaker in his field. As a testament to his success, Dr. Althoen was honored with a Faculty Achievement Award from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1990 alongside several Special Merit awards earlier in his career. He is a member of the Mathematics Association of America and former member of the American Mathematical Society and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Outside of his primary endeavors, he volunteered for the Flint Historic Preservation Study Committee and chaired the Pierce Community Council, as well as donated his time as an assistant coach and co-score keeper for the women’s varsity soccer team at Flint Central High School. Interested in attaining a higher education due to the influence of his father, Dr. Steven C. Althoen graduated with honors from Kenyon College with a BA in mathematics in 1969. Earning a PhD in mathematics from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 1973, he first worked at Hofstra University between 1973 and 1975 before relocating to Michigan, where he joined the faculty of the University of Michigan-Flint. Serving as an assistant professor, associate professor and full professor in the departments of mathematics and education, he attained the title of professor emeritus in 2010. During his tenure at the University of Michigan-Flint, he also served as chairman of the department of mathematics and sat on nearly two dozen committees. Likewise, he excelled as director of academic assessment in 2001 andwas a consultant for Mott Community College from 2001 to 2003. Demonstrating versatility in his field, Dr. Althoen co-authored or authored 29 articles and co-authored seven textbooks regarding mathematics and its applications between 1976 and 1994, including “Statistics: Concepts and Applications” in 1994 alongside H.
