Outside of counseling, she has thrived in academia as a Dean’s Council member for the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University (NYU), a visiting research faculty member at the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute, and a somatic experiencing trauma therapist at the Foundation for Human Enrichment. She also serves as an organizational consultant. Dr. Giuffra was an associate professor in the master’s and doctoral programs at NYU and the founding director of the bachelor’s and master’s degree nursing programs, as well as dean, at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Moreover, she was a staff therapist, faculty member and supervisor at the Center for Family Learning and served on the governing board of the Westchester Medical Center, Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center and Lawrence Hospital Center. Further, she was a co-chair of Group Care and Education of Infants and Toddlers at NYU, among other appointments. Dr. Giuffra received a BA from Saint John’s University and an MA, MS and PhD in research and theory development in nursing from NYU. A registered nurse via Saint Mary’s School of Nursing, she was trained in family therapy at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and is licensed as a marriage and family therapy and advanced practice clinical specialist in psychiatric mental health nursing. As a result of her research, she authored “2 X 2 on the Ark: Decoding Your Love Map: The Five Secrets of a Great Relationship” in 2021. Earning an honorary DHL from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Distinguished Alumni Award fromNYU’s Steinhardt School and College of Nursing, she has been featured on national radio and television networks and highlighted in The New York Times. Drawing upon over five decades in psychotherapy, education and authorship, Dr. Mary J. Giuffra first delved into private practice in 1972, where she has since worked with individuals, couples and families to improve family dynamics.
