The link between people and occupation has existed since the Paleolithic period. Early in human history, tools were developed to aid in activities necessary for survival, such as hunting and gathering. From our ancestors’ evolution, the meaning of work was revolutionized. For the first time, humans worked collaboratively toward a common goal. Deeply rooted, fundamental needs for food, water and shelter necessitated labor; each individual was responsible for the survival of the settlement. Althoughwemay consider these practices tobe archaic prototypes, they translated into our modern understanding of labor. It’s possible to recognize the patterns that facilitated the growth of the industries we know today. As centuries passed, we discovered not only the practical applications of work; we also found meaning in our jobs related to our interests, passions and cultures. This has contributed to a robust assortment of contemporary roles and speaks to the adaptability of the human drive and spirit. The industries that evolved from a need for survival built the sturdy foundation upon which we’ve explored our passions, unearthing greater meaning in our lives. In the 12th edition of Millennium Magazine, we accentuate the invaluable endeavors and passions of our listees, regardless of industry. With specialties in the creative arts, medicine, business, science and technology, academia, law, military service or humanitarianism, the individuals in this volume have achieved extraordinary feats. We invite you to celebrate their successes while observing our notable advancements throughout history.
