94 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine (board certified), vice president and president of the Great Lakes Region of Music Therapy and Assembly of Delegates for the National Association for Music Therapy, board of The Friends of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and moderator of Mayflower Congregational Church, where she has been a member for over 50 years. Her volunteer work includes homework helper for Somali children, Masterworks Ensemble and church choirs. Over a 10-year period, she co-led over 300 college students on “Sounds and Sights of Europe,” a multi-state educational program featuring art and music in major cultural centers. She has published scholarly articles and has given workshops and presentations nationally and internationally. Dr. Kagin attributes her success to her passion for music therapy, with an emphasis on the importance of the aesthetic expression. Among her career highlights, she is especially proud of developing a signature program at Augsburg University. Dr. Roberta Stewart Kagin pioneered in the field of music therapy, establishing a signature undergraduate degree at Augsburg College (later Augsburg University) in 1974. She later established the Master’s in Music Therapy program, the only music therapy degree program in private colleges in Minnesota. She served as director of music therapy and continued to teach until her retirement in 2019, at which time she was awarded the distinction of professor emeritus. Her prior clinical work in music therapy was with children with special needs and adults in mental health. Dr. Kagin’s post-secondary education included Northwestern University, Park University, University of Kansas and Temple University. She received Lifetime Achievement Awards in Music Therapy from Minnesota and the Great Lakes Region, and Temple University’s Outstanding Contributions to the Field. She is an accomplished organist, having served as church organist for over 40 years.
