106 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION To remain abreast of developments in the field, Dr. Thorsen has maintained membership with the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society for Engineering Education and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Likewise, he has served as first vice president of the Regency East Co-Op Board since 2012. Dr. Thorsen attributes his success to the influence of his wonderful colleagues, including his co-workers, mentors and many students. Among his many career highlights, he is especially proud of inspiring his students in a positive manner, as well as the plethora of work he conducted on the very first lunar module for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Looking toward the future, Dr. Thorsen intends to complete an additional project that will elaborate upon the history of New York University. A licensed professional engineer in the State of New York, Dr. Richard Stanley Thorsen has served the Tandon School of Engineering at New York University for the duration of his career. Following his receipt of a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from the City College of New York in 1962, he began a longstanding tenure at New York University, where he first served as a research assistant. While attending to his assistantship, he also earned a PhD inmechanical engineering from New York University in 1967. Garnering more than 50 years of experience in academia and mechanical engineering, Dr. Thorsen subsequently served as an instructor at New York University beginning in 1964. He also excelled as a professor of mechanical engineering, chairman of the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering, and vice president until attaining emeritus status. For his exceptional achievements at New York University, the Tandon School of Engineering bestowed upon him their Dedicated Alumnus Award in 2008. Earlier, he received a Faculty Advisor Award from the Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation in 1980.
