Following her receipt of her master’s degree, she returned to Kansas City University and earned an MD in 2015. Dr. Olinger joined the faculty of the University of Kansas shortly thereafter, where she found her niche in pediatrics. First serving as a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center, she has excelled as the site director of general pediatrics services through the medical center at KU Marillac since 2018. Likewise, she sits on the medical center’s ethics committee. As a testament to her success in academia and medicine, she was honored as Best Resident Teacher of the Year in 2018. Attributing her success to her patience, determination and willingness to leverage her imagination to apply her wealth of knowledge to patient issues, Dr. Olinger is credited for her compassionate nature toward her patients, as well as toward all teams at their facility. Likewise, she notes that her communication skills have been imperative to her success, as she carefully considers the role and function of each team member to provide the best possible care for children. Among her many career highlights, Dr. Olinger is especially proud of implementing a protocol for pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes during acute psychiatric crises. At the time, her facility did not have a team that managed the physical examination and assessment of these patients. However, her individualized protocol established the standard for assessing her patients. Looking toward the future, Dr. Olinger intends to witness the continued expansion of her team as they transform the institution into a more medical pediatric psychiatric-focused center.
