Over the course of his career thereafter, he has photographed the beauty of New York City, as well as an exploration of contrasts between Concord and Ipswich, two revolutionaryperiod towns in the State of Massachusetts. At the inception of his career, following a brief period as a young photography businessowner, Dr. Hartley served Wayne State University as an instructor and William Paterson University as an assistant professor. Subsequently, he was recruited by the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) in international executive education and, shortly thereafter, served as director of individual giving and executive director of the president’s council at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Following this period, Dr. Hartley was the associate dean for development and alumni affairs at the School of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. As his career progressed, Dr. Hartley was appointed as a senior philanthropic advisor for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – a newly created position at that time with an office in Florida. Garnering nearly 30 years of expertise in fundraising and philanthropic endeavors in the fields of cancer research and biomedicine, he notably worked with eight Nobel Prize winners during his tenure. Since 2008, Dr. Hartley has returned to his photography roots with Duncan Hartley Fine Art Photography, where he now hosts over 150 archival prints in permanent collections at 10major national museums and special collections. Dr. Hartley holds a BA in English history from the University of Michigan and an MA in English history and PhD in English literature, both from Wayne State University. He completed his doctoral dissertation on the works of Shakespeare. Dr. Hartley is a member of the communications committee of the Princeton United Methodist Church and is a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other organizations. Hailing from a family that was deeply involved in the arts, Dr. Duncan Hartley was influenced by his mother, who was an artist with her own gallery, and his father, a poet and Thoreau scholar.
