Accounting for his numerous achievements, Dr. Pettit attributes much of his success to his parents and dedicated teachers, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and valuable ideals of honesty. From an early age, he knew he wanted to become an engineer and attend Georgia Tech, knowing the university was regarded as the standard for high quality engineering, science and mathematics education. Outside of his vocational interests, Dr. Pettit is a devoted fan of the New York Yankees, and he remains deeply interested in classical films, American history, and reading fiction and comic books. Furthermore, Dr. Pettit is highly regarded for his creative output, having authored a memoir, “Mill-Village Boy,” which was published in 2004. In 2022, he published a revised and expanded edition of the book, titled “The Amazing Adventures of the Mill-Village Boy.” Likewise, he authored the 1982 reference book, “ECM and ECCM Techniques for Digital Communications Systems,” which can currently be found in over 100 libraries around the world. Dr. Pettit was an invited lecturer for multiday presentations on the subject of military communications systems in dozens of locations in the United States, as well as in many cities around the world.
