97 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Early in life, Dr. Paula McKenzie discovered her passion for finding her true voice and helping others amplify their voices to make positive differences in the world. Choosing the field of communications as her focus of study in college, she graduated from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida, with a Bachelor of Arts in communications in 1974. Shortly thereafter, she earned a Master of Science in speech communication and rhetoric from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, in 1983. After several years in her career, Dr. McKenzie returned to higher education and obtained a PhD in intercultural communication and rhetoric from Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 2003. Since 2004, Dr. McKenzie has excelled as an associate professor of communications at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Alongside this prominent role, she is also a faculty advisor for the National Society of Leadership and Success, as well as a coach for the Thurgood Marshall debate team. Earlier in her career, she served three mayors through the District of Columbia Commission for Women and sat on the board of directors of the National Woman’s Party in Washington, D.C. Notably, Dr. McKenzie conducted thorough research on the speech “What Does American Democracy Mean to Me?” by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. Her research was subsequently published in the Florida Communication Journal and, thereafter, was cited for excellence in reviews. As a testament to her resounding success, Dr. McKenzie has also earned Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Service to Students Awards, both from the National Society for Leadership and Success. Looking toward the future, Dr. McKenzie intends to witness the continued growth and success of her career with Bethune-Cookman University.
