Previously serving in the United States Army, Mr. Smith also earned the Outstanding Soldier Award in 1981. Among his many career achievements, Mr. Smith is especially gratified to have influenced the minds of the inmates whom he supervises, affecting their perspective on their crimes and allowing them opportunities to emerge from prison as a changed individual. In accounting for his success, he credits his ability to remain humble. Looking forward, he intends to pursue a master’s degree in counterterrorism or intelligence management. He would also like to earn a doctorate degree in the forthcoming years. Since 2019, Phillip Smith has excelled as a correctional corporal for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. In his respected position, he works directly with sex offenders who are inmates in the prison system and is responsible for their wellness until they leave the facility. Prior to his current role, Mr. Smith served as a sergeant for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, as well as a crisis intervention suicide prevention counselor for the County of Alameda in California. He also served for two decades as a correctional corporal for the San Quentin State Prison in San Quentin, California. In pursuit of his career, Mr. Smith enrolled in the University of San Francisco, from which he earned a Bachelor of Public Administration. Likewise, he has maintained involvement in his field via memberships with the Nebraska Public Media, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Public Safety Committee of San Pablo, California, and the Autism Community in Action.
