133 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Desiring to serve students and lead them toward a path of success, Dr. Robert G. Smith delved into the field of education. First receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Davis & Elkins College in 1965, he went on to attend the University of Maryland at College Park, from which he earned a Master of Arts in 1972 and a PhD in 1973. At the inception of his career, Dr. Smith was a social studies teacher for Frederick County Public Schools before becoming director of curriculum and staff development between 1978 and 1981. He also served Governor Thomas Johnson High School as a senior high school teacher, as well as the chairman of the social studies department and assistant and associate principal. Subsequently, he was assistant superintendent of the Spring Independent School District between 1981 and 1997. Following this tenure, he was the superintendent for Arlington Public Schools between 1997 and 2009. Escalating to higher education, he excelled as an associate professor of educational leadership at George Mason University from 2009 until his retirement in 2019. Dr. Smith presently sits on the board of trustees of Davis & Elkins College and serves as a member of the board of directors of the Dream Project, which provides scholarships to immigrant students in Arlington and other parts of Virginia. Previously, Dr. Smith was chairman of the George Mason University Arlington Campus Advisory Board from 2011 to 2014. He further served as a member of the selection committee for National Superintendent of the Year with the American Association of School Administrators from 2009 to 2013 and on the Teaching with Primary Sources Board of Directors of Northern Virginia from 2011 to 2021. Dr. Smith co-authored “Striving with Equity” with S. David Brazer in 2016 and co-authored, alongside five others, “Gaining on the Gap: Changing Hearts, Minds and Practice” in 2011. He is especially proud of his work on educational equity in relation to alleviating gaps in opportunity based upon a student’s race.
