Sans has excelled as a research chemist for Gotion (formerly known as Novolyte Technologies) in Independence, Ohio. Alongside this position, he has served as a research scientist for BASF since 2012 and has been an instructor at various conferences sponsored by the American Chemical Society and The Electrochemical Society. Earlier in his career, Dr. Sans served such corporations as Ferro Corporation, Degussa Corporation, S.D. Meyers Inc., and Lockheed Martin. Likewise, he was affiliated with the NASA Johnson Space Center for two years and lent his expertise as an assistant professor in the department of geology at Ball State University. Drawing upon a PhD from the University of Chicago from 1983, Dr. Sans completed several courses through The Electrochemical Society and PTi International between 2006 and 2008. He also developed a patent for “Triazine Compounds for Removing Acids and Water from Nonaqueous Electrolytes for Electrochemical Cell” in 2010. Initially expressing interest in his profession due to his inherent interest in chemistry, Dr. Sans is especially proud of his patent, as well as developing methods to indirectly measure the strength of the Kraftpaper insulation. Shaffer has been distinguished as a medical director and educator for nearly 50 years. Presently serving the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children as associate director of Nemours Biomedical Research and director of the Nemours Research Lung Center since 2001, he has also served as director of the Nemours Office of Technology Transfer. Notably, Dr. Shaffer was awarded an NIH Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence grant in 2004, a $30 million federal grant that helped develop the Nemours Center for Pediatric Research. Additionally, Dr. Shaffer served Temple University as a professor of physiology and pediatrics until attaining emeritus status and was a lecturer at international medical conferences. He led the first clinical trial using oxygen-rich liquid ventilation to help premature infants breathe, which was featured in the articles “Miracle Baby,” “Unbelievable Stories” and “The New Scientist.” He has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe and USA Today, among others, and contributed 78 book chapters, 306 peerreviewed manuscripts and 605 abstracts to scientific publications.
