There, she earned an MS in music education and trumpet performance certificate in 1978 and a PhD in music education in 1990, as well as received the 1978 AMOCO Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award. Dr. Hardin was a middle school band director for 28 years, was three-time site Teacher of the Year and 2002 Beaufort County Teacher of the Year. During that time, she challenged her students by commissioning 14 major composers, including John O’Reilly, David Holsinger and Elliot Del Borgo. Dr. Hardin was editor of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) Journal from 1978 to 1996. She is the author of “A Trumpeter’s Guide to Orchestral Excerpts” (1977), “A Horn Player’s Guide to Orchestral Excerpts” (1978), “Yamaha Band Student Teacher’s Resource Guide” and “Yamaha Band Student Workbook” (1994), co-author of “Inside John Haynie’s Studio: A Master Teacher’s Lessons on Trumpet and Life” (2007), and author of “A Ray Bradbury Compendium” (2021). It was as editor of the ITG Journal and her request to reprint a poemabout Louis Armstrong that led to Dr. Hardin’s 30-year friendship with author Ray Bradbury. He dedicated a book to her and wrote poems for the Journal, even setting one to music. She compiled and submitted the portfolio nomination that resulted in the awarding of the Pulitzer Prize Special Citation to Bradbury in 2007. On August 22, 2020, in honor of Ray Bradbury’s birthday centennial, the University of South Carolina Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections announced the acquisition of The Anne Farr Hardin – Ray Bradbury Collection. Hardin is passionate about the various hats she wears; happily, each seems to enhance the others. Her music career began at the age of 10 when she joined the elementary school band and took up the cornet. Much success followed, and she chose to major in music.
