128 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Now retired, Dr. Meg McGavran Murray is recognized as a professor emerita at Mississippi State University (MSU), where she taught English for 30 years. Prior to her longstanding tenure at MSU, she operated as a professor at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. During her time as an educator, Dr. Murray primarily instructed students in women’s studies and American Romanticism. To wit, she is well regarded in her field for her dedication to teaching. Adjacent to her responsibilities as a professor, Dr. Murray has maintained membership with the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the United States. As a member, she served as president of the Northeast Mississippi Graduate Association. In addition, she was the president of the MSU chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. Prior to beginning her vocational journey, Dr. Murray cultivated her own education, earning several degrees over the course of her academic career. She first attended The Ohio State University, where she earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts. Subsequently, in 1972, she received a PhD in English romantic and American literature from Cornell University, where she studied under M. H. Abrams, one of the great English Romantic scholars. Well regarded for her scholarly output as well, Dr. Murray is the author of “Margaret Fuller: Wandering Pilgrim,” a book that provides insights into Fuller’s troubled upbringing and successful career as a journalist and revolutionary. In 2008, the book was honored by the American Library Association and recognized with their Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title. Furthermore, Dr. Murray was the editor of the 1984 essay collection “Face to Face,” which collected works pertaining to fatherhood, motherhood, and the concepts of masters and monsters. Dr. Murray attributes much of her success to the support and guidance of her father, who instilled in her the value of a strong education and a dedicated work ethic. Dr. Murray is thankful for the book he gifted her, “The Improvement of the Mind” by Isaac Watts, which taught her many enriching lessons and offered her a new, philosophical perspective on life.
