He is also a member of the American Society of Media Photographers and the San Diego News Photographers, where he has served as a former board member, chapter president and chapter vice president to both organizations. An award-winning journalist through the MPTA Contest, Mr. Gatley earned numerous accolades through the Society of Professional Journalists and the San Diego Press Club Award. Upon reflection, Mr. Gatley considers his most notable accomplishment has been his involvement with the United ServiceOrganization, through which he was able to capture moments that are now regarded as important pieces of history. Looking toward the future, he aims to continue his work as a photographer and spend more time with his wife and family. Distinguished for his skill and contributions to photography, Mr. Gatley commenced his career with the United Service Organization. In 1978, he became a photographer for the Los Angeles Times and was promoted to chief photographer by 1991. Subsequently, starting in 1996, he worked as a photographer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency until 2002. Mr. Gatley has also served as a computer programmer for RAND Corporation and a journalism instructor at Point Loma Nazarene University. Supported by his considerable expertise, he has excelled as the owner of Gatley Photography since 1970. Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Gatley has contributed to several publications and has written articles in professional journals. He is the author of “Running with the Frogs” and is the photographer, editor and co-author of “US Naval Special Warfare/US Navy SEALs.” Through his work, Mr. Gatley has been present at the Iraq, Afghanistan and Eastern European war fronts. Regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he is impressed by the work of the journalists who are covering the invasion for bringing the situation home, and he hopes for individuals to react, understand and learn from the event.
