120 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION In recognition of his career, Dr. Maier earned an Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence in 1974, was a Distinguished Faculty Scholar at Western Michigan University in 1981, was named Professor of the Year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in 1984, received a Citation from the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters in 1985, andwas a GoldMedallion Book Award winner in 1989. Marquis Who’s Who gave him their 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor awarded to fewer than 3% of listees. Dr. Maier earned an MA from Harvard University and MDiv from the Concordia Seminary. Subsequently, he attained a PhD, summa cum laude, from the University of Basel in Switzerland, where he studied under Karl Barth and Oscar Cullmann. Dr. Maier received three honorary doctorates from Concordia Seminary, Concordia University Ann Arbor and Concordia University Irvine. Further information is housed at The Maier Center in Ann Arbor. An educator, writer and historian, Dr. Paul L. Maier taught at Western Michigan University for 51 years until his retirement in 2011, making him the first faculty member to serve 50 years at the institution. He is the former Russell H. Siebert professor until attaining emeritus status, having also been campus chaplain for 39 of his years on campus. Previously, he served as a vice president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. A Lutheran scholar on the history of Christianity, Dr. Maier has written scholarly works and 25 historical fiction and nonfiction books on Christianity and ancient historians, as well as seven children’s books and seven DVD seminars. Dr. Maier originated two new literary genres, the documentary historical novel and the theological thriller. Some of his books include the #1 national bestseller in religious fiction, “A Skeleton in God’s Closet” from 1993. He recently published “The Genuine Jesus: Fresh Evidence from History and Archeology.” Other historical novels include “Pontus Pilate” and “Flames of Rome.” His first book, “A Man Spoke, A World Listened,” is a biography of his father, Dr. Walter A.
