Earlier, Dr. May thrived as a population specialist and long-term consultant in the African region of the World Bank, including the role of co-coordinator of the World Bank Population and Reproductive Health Thematic Group, followed by tenures as visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development, and visiting scholar at the Population Reference Bureau. Other vocational endeavors to his credit have included roles as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, senior associate and senior scientist at the Futures Group International, population training coordinator at the International Union for the Scientific Study of Populations, and a United Nations advisor on demography and population statistics for the South Pacific Commission in New Caledonia. Likewise, he is a former educator in Brussels, Belgium, and was a research assistant at the Catholic University of Louvain. To prepare for his career, Dr. May studied in Belgium, receiving a BA in modern history and an MA in demography from the Catholic University of Louvain in 1973 and 1985, respectively. Thereafter, he earned a PhD in demography from Paris Descartes University, graduating summa cum laude in 1996. Throughout his career, Dr. May has attended conferences, universities and symposia as a keynote speaker, lecturer and presenter, as well as authored and co-authored a number of books, chapters, articles, op-eds and podcasts. As a testament to his success, Dr. May earned several World Bank Spot Awards, as well as the Chief Economist’s Best Practice Award from World Bank Africa Region, Good Practice ICR Quality Award for the Gambia HIV/AIDS Rapid Response Project ICR, and Global Media Award for best book in population for his book, “World Population Policies: Their Origin, Evolution and Impact,” published by Springer in 2012. Drawing upon nearly five decades of expertise in academia, population studies and research, Dr. John F. Mayhas excelled as a research professor in the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University since 2020 and an honorary professor at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, since 2021.
