In her roles, she exemplified expertise in a variety of disciplines including reading, language arts, social studies, science, chemistry and mathematics. Over the course of her career, which lasted over 30 years, Dr. Bitterwolf served institutions and professional organizations in executive roles and also served on the Idaho State Professional Standards Commission and the national board of directors of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. She obtained a PhD in curriculum and instruction from the University of Idaho in 1998. Certified by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards in its first cadre of National Board Professional Certified Teachers, she held Idaho Advanced Professional Secondary Certificates in Reading and Mathematics, as well as a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate. Hailing from a family of educators and coming of age in a university town where much emphasis was placed on academia, Dr. Caroline Means Bitterwolf desired to become a teacher herself. First earning a BS in education from Centenary College of Louisiana in 1968, she went on to work for a number of school districts across West Virginia at Wiley H. Bates Junior High School and Maryland, including Anne Arundel County Public Schools, where she served as a teacher at Germantown Elementary School, Harman Elementary School and Annapolis Junior High School until 1988. While tending to her teaching appointments, Dr. Bitterwolf studied at the University of Maryland, from which she received an MEd in mathematics in 1987. Subsequently, Dr. Bitterwolf joined the Moscow School District in Idaho in 1988, where she was a ninth-grade reading teacher and seventh-grade study skills teacher at Moscow Junior High School until 1995.
