119 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Currently recognized as a professor emeritus of the doctoral program in earth and environmental sciences within the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), Dr. Arthur M. Langer has excelled in his postacademic years as a research associate within the department of earth and planetary sciences at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. While working for CUNY, he served in a myriad of leadership roles, including as director of the Environmental Sciences Laboratory, member of the Institutes of Applied Sciences and director of the City University Consortium. Earlier in his career, Dr. Langer held additional faculty positions with CUNY as a lecturer in the department of geology from 1964 to 1965 and later served the Mount Sinai School of Medicine as the associate director of the Environmental Sciences Laboratory between 1965 and 1986. He was also a member of the Center for Polypeptide and Membrane Research from 1986 to 1988, at which time he was honored as an international figure in the study of mineral dusts and their biological effects. Furthermore, Dr. Langer was a professor at Brooklyn College from 1990 to 2004, having also had an appointment in their Graduate School from 2004 to 2020. To prepare for his career, Dr. Langer earned a BA from Hunter College in 1956, an MA from Columbia University in 1962 and a PhD from Columbia University in 1965. During his studies at Columbia University, he focused his attention on mineralogy and collaborated with department faculty to produce reports in relation to issues in mining and petroleum corporations and in the U.S. Air Force. These studies were published in national peerreviewed literature from the American Geological Society of America and Mineralogical Society of America. For his success, Dr. Langer earned the Career Scientist Award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the John Polachek Foundation Award for Medical Research on Silicosis, and a Commendation from the Mayor of New York City.
