132 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Dr. William J. Shoemaker developed an interest in the sciences during his formative years. Enrolling in the University of Massachusetts in his native Boston, he received a BA in zoology in 1964. Following this accomplishment, he earned a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971. After obtaining his doctorate degree, Dr. Shoemaker was appointed an associate section chief with the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1972 to 1976. Thereafter, he served the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, from 1976 to 1984 before joining the faculty of the University of Connecticut. Serving the University of Connecticut for 33 years, Dr. Shoemaker excelled as a professor of psychiatry in their Health Center from 1985 until attaining emeritus status in 2018. Alongside this vocational endeavor, he thrived as a consultant for research programs at a myriad of academic and scientific institutions across the United States. Among his notable achievements, Dr. Shoemaker is especially renowned in the fields of academia and neuroscience for his contributions to books and journals on psychiatry and psychology. Currently, he is writing a book titled “The Origin of Evil and the Social Brain Network,” in which he discusses the prevalence of brain lesions in individuals with mental illnesses who demonstrate criminal inclinations. Furthermore, Dr. Shoemaker has lent his time and expertise to community organizations, having served as a member of the leadership group of the Unitarian Society of Hartford, Connecticut. Likewise, he is an officer with the Institute of Religion in the Age of Science. He has found the most rewarding aspect of his career to be recognition of his work by his peers, particularly the research he has conducted in psychiatry. Additionally, he advises prospective health care professionals and researchers to move forth with an open mind and be thorough in research efforts. As a testament to his success, Dr. Shoemaker has been highlighted in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World.
