136 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION During her high school years in the late 1960s, Marilyn Que Tucker played basketball as she thoroughly enjoyed the athletic realm. However, during that time there were few opportunities for women athletes, thereby prompting her to undertake physical education coursework in college. In 1974, she graduated from Mars Hill University with a Bachelor of Science, followed by a Master of Arts in physical education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1977. She commenced her career as a public school teacher in the State of North Carolina in 1975. After serving as an educator in the North Carolina school system until 1989, Ms. Tucker joined North Carolina State University, where she excelled as an assistant coach until 1991. For the following 11 years, she thrived as an assistant executive director for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). Ms. Tucker continued her vocational pursuits at the NCHSAA as deputy director from 2002 to 2015. Since 2015, she has served as the executive director and commissioner at the NCHSAA. To give back to her alma mater, Ms. Tucker has been a member of the board of trustees at Mars Hill University. In addition, she remains abreast of developments in her field through her affiliation with the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association, the board of directors of the National Federation of High Schools and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). As a testament to her resounding success in her industry, Ms. Tucker has received a plethora of accolades. More recently in 2011, she received the Dr. Nell C. Jackson National Award from the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports, having that same year been inducted into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. In 2010, she was also selected for inclusion in the North Carolina Athletic Directors’ Hall of Fame and, in 2007, she earned a National Citation Award from the National Federation of High Schools. Moreover, in 1987, Ms. Tucker was named a charter member of the Mars Hill University Athletic Hall of Fame.
