Bredfeldt most recently served as a gastroenterologist andhepatologist at the VirginiaMasonMedical Center in Seattle from 1988 to 2015, as well as chairman of its institutional review board at the Benaroya Research Institute from 1988 to 2018. Earlier in his career, he was a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque from 1983 to 1988, having formerly served as an instructor in medicine at Yale University for the preceding two years. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and holds an MD from the University of Kansas School of Medicine from 1974. Notably, he was elected to the medical honor society of Alpha Omega Alpha. To prepare for his career, Dr. Bredfeldt completed his medical training at the University of Kansas, where he first served as an intern from 1974 to 1975. He then completed a residency in internal medicine in 1977. He also completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Missouri-Columbia and in hepatology at Yale University in 1979 and 1981, respectively. To date, Dr. Bredfeldt has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters and is recognized as a fellow of the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology and American Gastroenterological Association. His research has been in relation to experimental portal hypertension, a blood condition that occurs in the abdomen of individuals with liver cirrhosis. Impressively, his research was published in the American Journal of Physiology, which has garnered over 600 citations. Dr. Bredfeldt attributes much of his success to the encouragement of his parents, who both valued the importance of a strong education. Likewise, his path into the field of gastroenterology was inspired by the former chief physician of internal medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Dr. Norton Greenberger, who mentored Dr. Bredfeldt during his medical studies and training.
