401 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SOCIAL SERVICES AND NONPROFIT DUSTRY in 1952 by Ms. Smith’s parents, Lawrence M.C. and Eleanor H. Smith, to preserve and save Maine’s open environmental spaces, as well as historic structures, Wolfe’s Neck Center has continued to spread awareness of sustainable agriculture through to the present day. Notably, the mission of the Wolfe’s Neck Center advocates for organic approaches to agriculture, having been proponents for halting the use of chemical pesticides and helping environmental conservation efforts. Additionally, the Center is an educational tool that offers the public recreational activities, including nature walks, kayaking, courses in animal husbandry, and workshops that offer classes on preparing ingredients, collecting honey and growing vegetables. Upon Ms. Smith’s father’s death in 1975, Ms. Smith’s mother gifted Wolfe’s Neck Farm to the University of Southern Maine. Thereafter, in 1997, the Wolfe’s Neck Farm Foundation, Inc., took over the farm’s operations as a community resource in nature preservation and awareness. Earlier in her career, Ms. Smith pursued a formal education at the New School of Music in Philadelphia, receiving a diploma in viola and serving on the board of the English Speaking Union. Civically involved, she continues to serve on the women’s committee of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, having previously been a board member of the Maine Maritime Museum. Until her retirement, she was treasurer of the Wolfe’s Neck Farm Foundation. Likewise, Ms. Smith maintained membership with the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia and other prominent nonprofit organizations. She has also been a 20-year member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. R ecognized as a compassionate philanthropist throughout the State of Maine, G. G. Meredith S. S. Smith has dedicated her life’s work to sharing the Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and Environment, which is an award-winning farm, campground and nonprofit educational center.
