Likewise, the Jaycees of Shenango Valley, Pennsylvania, bestowed upon him three Bronze, two Silver and four Gold Awards for outstanding service to his community, and he earned the M. H. Wilson Self-Reliance award from Sharon High School. Reflecting on his career thus far, Mr. Benson considers his most notable achievement is his 55-year career working in both the funeral home and steel industries, which he has found especially fulfilling. Looking toward the future, he intends to ease into a well-deserved retirement and enjoy more time with his wife, Sonia, and four children, as well as his six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He also plans to continue working and living by his motto, “Do your best.” Entering his line of work at the age of 12, C. Thomas Benson Jr. has gained more than five decades of experience in the funeral home business, dating back to 1967. In his current position as a funeral home assistant, his area of expertise resides in picking up the deceased, dressing and casketing them, as well as cremations. During the earlier stage of his career, for more than 30 years, Mr. Benson served as a laborer in the steel industry, working his way to the position quality assurance foreman before retiring from the steel industry and entering the field of mortuary services. Outside of his primary roles with the funeral home, Mr. Benson has been active as a scout leader with the Boys Scouts of America, as well as a district director of his local chapter of the Jaycees. Moreover, he is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Benson attributes much of his success to his dedication to putting forth his best effort in everything he does.
