248 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY Herman Keizer Jr.’s journey began at Calvin College, earning a BA in philosophy and Greek in 1965. During this time, he was drafted and served on active duty at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, for two years prior to returning and finishing his degree. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he earned a BDiv in theology from Calvin Theological Seminary in 1968, MA in education from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1978 and ThM from New York Theological Seminary in 1979. He was an in-house student at U.S. Army War College, graduating in 1992. In1968, CHKeizerwasordainedaminister in theChristianReformedChurch and commissioned as a chaplain in the Army, having served worldwide and worked with other NATO country military chaplains. Advancing to the rank of colonel, he remained with the Army until his mandatory retirement in 1998. He was recalled back to service at the Pentagon and, subsequently, by the Secretary of the Army to serve as an advisor to the Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom for the Department of State until 2002. CH Keizer was presented with a Defense Superior Service Medal, four Legions of Merit, six Bronze Stars, including onewith a V for valor in combat, the Soldier’s Medal and the Purple Heart. In 2012, he accepted the David E. White Award from the Military Chaplains Association and was named Distinguished Alumnus at Calvin College in 2001 and Calvin Theological Seminary in 2003. He counseled at the Pentagon and Department of State following the September 11th attacks, organized a roundtable meeting with the Muslim community, and testified on the Hill with Senator Lindsey Graham on the constitutionality of military chaplains. In 2012, CH Keizer became involved in the Moral Injury and Soul Repair Project in relationship to PTSD with Dr. Rita Brock at Brite Divinity School. He was a counselor with Heartside Ministries, GRACE, Restorative Justice, Healing Children of Conflict and Micah Center, and director of the Chaplaincy and Care ministry in the Christian Reformed Church of North America. He passed away on December 22, 2017 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery and will be inducted into the Michigan State Veterans Hall of Honor in November 2022. HERMAN KEIZER JR.
