A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Cushman served on the editorial board of “Heart Disease: A Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine” from 1998 to 2000. Currently, he is an editorial board member of the American Journal of Clinical Hypertension. Notably, he has published over 350 articles in professional journals and chapters in books. Outside of his primary efforts, Dr. Cushman is an assistant pastor at the St. John Orthodox Church in Memphis, having been ordained to priesthood in 1987. Dr. Cushman has earned a myriad of research grants in light of his outstanding undertakings. A fellow of the American College of Physicians, he is especially proud of being part of the investigative group that demonstrated how lowering hypertension to a systolic blood pressure of 120 was beneficial in reducing cardiovascular events and mortality. Intrigued by the subjects of science and mathematics, Dr. William C. Cushman developed a strong interest in medicine at a formative age. Inspired by his neighbor’s atlas of human anatomy, he was fascinated by the complexity of the human body. He subsequently attended the University of Mississippi, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1970 and an MD in 1974. Thereafter, he completed a residency at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson in 1977 and went on to serve the institution as an instructor, an assistant professor and an associate professor until 1988. Following his appointments at the University of Mississippi, Dr. Cushman joined the Jackson VA Medical Center, where he served as chief of the hypertension section for a decade. From there, he served in the same capacity at the Memphis VA Medical Center from 1988 to 1997. Dr. Cushman was appointed an associate professor of medicine and preventive medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis in 1988 and was promoted to the rank of full professor in 1994, where he remains today.
