124 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Accruing six decades of experience as an educator, Dr. Floyd W. McCoy is a proven leader in the field of geology. Since 1990, he has taught as a professor of geology, geophysics and oceanography at the University of Hawaii-Windward, in which he specializes in marine geology, volcanology and geo-archaeology, as well as teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels. For his dedication to the university as an educator and alumnus, Dr. McCoy received the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2021. Prior to beginning his vocational journey, Dr. McCoy served with the United States Navy between 1954 and 1959. During his service, he participated in U.S. military actions in the First Taiwan Strait Crisis, also known as the Formosa Crisis, between 1954 and 1955. Following his time with the Navy, Dr. McCoy pursued a formal education, attending the University of Hawaii and earning a BS in geology in 1962 and an MS in volcanology in 1965. He subsequently studied at Harvard University and achieved a PhD in geological sciences in 1974. Dr. McCoy has taught students and worked with colleagues and institutions worldwide, traveling as a professor and scientist to Greece, Italy and New York. Adjacent to his primary responsibilities, he has also operated as a senior research scientist with the Associated Scientists at Woods Hole since 1986. Prior to joining his alma mater as a professor, he functioned as the curator and director of the Core Laboratory at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University from 1974 to 1986. Furthermore, Dr. McCoy has maintained membership with several academic and scientific organizations, including the Geological Society of America, Archaeological Institute of America, American Geophysical Union and American Association for the Advancement of Science. Throughout his career, Dr. McCoy has always followed a focused approach in his work, finding it best to understand information before applying and teaching it. Towit, he attributesmuch of his success to his sincere interest and passion in the field. In light of his accomplished career, Dr. McCoy hopes to continue teaching, and he looks forward to retiring in the forthcoming years. FLOYD W.
