138 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Drawn to the field of archaeology from a young age, Dr. Livingston V. Watrous desired to pursue a career in the field. To prepare for his pronounced career, he attended Princeton University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in classics and art history in 1966. After a number of years, he returned to higher education at the University of Pennsylvania, from which he received a PhD in classical archaeology in 1975. He subsequently spent one year studying and working at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens before joining the faculty at the University at Buffalo in New York. Beginning in 1977, Dr. Watrous has served as a professor of art history at the University at Buffalo. Throughout the course of his career in academia, he has also excelled as the director of archaeological excavation at the Island of Crete since 2010. Looking toward the future of his research, he intends to put together a series of volumes that will document what he and his team have found on their excavations for the last 12 years. Notably, Dr. Watrous received grants from a Fulbright program and a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Among the many highlights of his career, Dr. Watrous is especially proud of authoring his most recent book, “Minoan Crete: An Introduction” through Cambridge University Press in 2021. He has also authored and co-authored several other publications, such as “The Galatas Survey: The SocioEconomic and Political Development of a Contested Territory in Central Crete during the Neolithic to Ottoman Periods” in 2017, “Archaeological Survey of the Gournia Landscape: A Regional History of the Mirabello Bay, Crete, in Antiquity” in 2012, and “Greek Vases from the Buffalo Museum of Science: Life's Possessions: Treasures from Hades” and “The Plain of Phaistos: Cycles of Social Complexity in the Mesara Region of Crete,” both in 2005.
