240 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY Notably, Mr. Bella thrived in his position, helping veterans transition into productive vocational endeavors with much improvement to their mental and physical health. After 31 years of work, Mr. Bella recently retired. Outside of his primary efforts, he was also a commissioner for the Methuen Historic District Commission, having also been chairman for a decade. Civically involved as well, he has been a 40-year member of the Sons of Italy Lodge 902, sat on the council of the St. Alfio Society in Lawrence, and was a member of the American Legion in excess of 30 years. Furthermore, Mr. Bella has been a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a past president of both the Lawrence History Center and Friends of Lawrence Heritage State Park. Mr. Bella was honored with two American Legion Awards in 1995 and 1998 in light of his efforts inplacing themost veterans in employment positions throughout Massachusetts. Supported by over 30 years of expertise in employment training, Joseph G. Bella commenced his career in the United States military, where he served for three years as a field artillery personnel. Spending one year in Vietnam between 1966 and 1967, he was subsequently discharged and enrolled in Northern Essex Community College. He then received an associate degree in liberal arts with a major in history in 1974. Mr. Bella was one of 3,000 individuals who were affected by the oil embargo crisis of 1974. Following the crisis, he contacted his local CETA program to help him find suitable work to progress further in his career. Encouraged to work for the City of Lawrence, Massachusetts, Mr. Bella was one of eight individuals hired for a three-month probational period for the city. Thereafter, he was hired on a full-time basis for the Department of Employment and Training via the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving as a local veterans employment representative. In his role, he was notable for successfully finding employment for military veterans and training them for each of their positions. JOSEPH G.
