Likewise, he was a course instructor in the Division of Continuing Education at Cape Cod Community College, including course instructor on Martha’s Vineyard Island. A licensed psychologist, both U.S. and international certification as an advanced specialist in substance abuse and addiction counseling, Dr. Clayton holds a PhD in counseling psychology from Pennsylvania State University. Looking forward, he intends to continue services through consultations and presentations to the public, as well as professionals regarding “Understanding the Process of Addiction: A 21st Century Update.” Supported by over five decades of expertise in mental health care, continuing education and drug counseling, Dr. Lawrence T. Clayton excelled as a licensed psychologist at his own agency, Lawrence T. Clayton and Counseling Associates, Inc., from 1984 to 2002, when he sold his facility licensed with the Pennsylvania Department of Health for Drug and Alcohol Out-Patient Counseling. He then joined Child, Adult and Family Psychological Center as an independent associate between 2002 and 2020, continuing his practice of substance abuse counseling. He has lent his wealth of knowledge to several entities, including Pennsylvania State University as an adjunct professor of counseling psychology for nearly 20 years and the U.S. Department of Transportation as a substance abuse professional for nearly a decade. Dr. Clayton commenced his career as a clinical psychology specialist in the Mental Hygiene Consultation Division of the U.S. Army after being drafted during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969.
