MARTINEZ, PHD REGENTS’ PROFESSOR (RETIRED) University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM Over the course of nearly five decades, Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez cultivated a wealth of experience as a leader in the field of education. He began his career as a teacher in 1974, operating as a teaching assistant at the University of New Mexico, where he subsequently served as a professor in mathematics from 1985 to 1986, as well as a regents’ professor from 1986 until his retirement in 2012. In addition, Dr. Martinez functioned as a professor at the University of Albuquerque between 1982 and 1985, having originally joined the faculty in 1978 as the director of the reading laboratory. Adjacent to his primary vocational duties, Dr. Martinez continues to serve schools in his local community as a mathematics teacher, referee, reviewer for mathematics teaching, and book and manuscript reviewer. He also previously served on the editorial board of the Journal of College Reading and Learning from 1984 to 1989. In addition to his professional experience, he previously served honorably with the United States Marine Corps between 1964 and 1968, achieving the rank of sergeant and receiving a nomination for Marine of the Year prior to retiring.
