135 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION role, Ms. Tobin operated as a resource specialist teacher at Cole Elementary School and Clovis West High School, within the Clovis Unified School District, from 1984 to 2014. She also previously taught students at several Fresno County schools between 1980 and 1982, including Orange Center School, West Park School and Tranquility High School. Prior to beginning her vocational journey, Ms. Tobin cultivated her own education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history from Illinois State University in 1971. She then subsequently enlisted with the United States Army, serving between 1971 and 1972 as an executive officer, training officer and acting commander, and held the rank of second lieutenant. Following her service, she studied at Fresno Pacific University and achieved two master’s degrees in 1973, one in language arts and reading, and another in educational administration. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Tobin began tutoring at the Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, North Carolina, serving the Marines from 1974 to 1976. Ms. Tobin was inspired to pursue a career in education by her daughter, who was born hard of hearing. Therefore, she dedicated herself to educating others, especially children dealing with learning disabilities and hearing impairments. To commemorate her commitment and accomplishments in the field, Ms. Tobin was recognized with the CANHC Award for Special Education Service from Clovis West in 1985 and the Bronze Award from The American Legion Post 147 in 2017, and she was named Legionnaire of the Year by Cecil Cox Post 147 in 2017. Over the course of her career, she has attributed much of her success to her love and passion for her profession. K aren Balske Tobin has specialized in the fields of education and history for over four decades. Since 2014, she has operated as the post and district historian for The American Legion, where she was responsible for writing narratives, photography and reporting on recent events.
