146 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine Lila Kane has held a love and passion for music since a formative age, thereby leading her to receive a BA in music from Brooklyn College in 1977. At the inception of her career, she served as a musical director, piano teacher and freelance accompanist, having served in the lattermost position to the present day. Likewise, she has also taught in academia at Providence College and Rhode Island College, where she presently excels as an adjunct professor. Over the course of her career, Ms. Kane has also thrived as a musical theater teacher and guest artist for the theater department at the University of Rhode Island. Through her esteemed work, Ms. Kane is responsible for introducing her students to various musical genres, which has encouraged them to research and perform new work in a variety of unique styles. A member of the National Association for Music Education and Rhode Island Music Educators Association, she intends to continue her teaching efforts and musical endeavors in the years to come. Ms. Kane credits much of her success to her perseverance through struggles and emphasis on practice and preparation through her academic roles. ADJUNCT PROFESSOR Rhode Island College Smithfield, RI LILA KANE EDUCATION Inspired to delve into teaching in light of her parents’ professions as teachers and an influential teacher she had in her youth, Valeska L. James received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Tampa in 1999. Since receiving her degree, she has excelled as a teacher at Hillsborough County Schools in Tampa, Florida. She is also certified in elementary education for first through sixth grade. Among the many highlights of her career, she is especially proud of witnessing the glow on a student’s face when they understand a concept that she has taught. Ms. James notes that working with children provides her with a great sense of accomplishment, knowing that she is touching the lives of future generations. In accounting for her success, Ms. James credits the inspiration from her parents and former teachers, as well as her own sense of diligence and perseverance. Inducted into the National Teachers Honor Society in light of her own success, she intends to experience the continued growth of her career.
