Velarde, Esq., participated in a mock trial competition. Greatly encouraged by her teachers, she was instilled with a sense of confidence in her trial skills. From thereon, Ms. Velarde sought to enter the field of law. After her high school graduation, she attended Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, through which she obtained a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice in 2006. Shortly thereafter, she enrolled in the University of Massachusetts School of Law, receiving a JD in 2012. Now equipped with more than 10 years of expertise in law, Ms. Velarde has excelled as the managing attorney of the eponymously named Law Office of Jennifer Velarde in New Bedford, Massachusetts, since 2013. In her prominent role, she focuses much of her practice on immigration law, as well as family law and estate planning. Earlier in her career, Ms. Velarde served AmeriCorps’ New American Integration Program from 2011 to 2013, as well as the Law Office of George A. Pliakas in Providence, Rhode Island, as a legal assistant in 2013. While attending to her law degree studies, Ms. Velarde also served as an assistant for South Coastal Counties Legal Services in 2011 and a legal secretary for Lang, Xifaras and Bullard from 2009 to 2011 and for the Diktas Schandler & Gillen Law Firm in 2008. Likewise, Ms. Velarde was an administrative assistant for M&M Bail Bonds from 2006 to 2007 and a legal secretary for Carbone Law Firm, P.C., from 2004 to 2006. At the inception of her career in 2005, she completed an internship at the Office of U.S. Senator Robert Menendez. To remain abreast of developments in her areas of expertise, Ms. Velarde has maintained professional affiliation with several industryrelated organizations. She is a board member of the Immigrants’ Assistance Center, as well as a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association. Outside of her primary endeavors, Ms. Velarde is a council member for the Assembly of God.
