During the course of his 30-year military career, his noteworthy assignments had included duties as wing chaplain for the Second Marine Aircraft Wing and director of plans, programs and professional development for the Navy’s Chief of Chaplains. Additionally, he served as force chaplain for the Chief of Naval Education and Training, the head of chaplain program development at the Naval Education Professional Development and Technology Center, and the director of the Naval Chaplains School. He also served as regional chaplain for the Navy Region Gulf Coast. Rev. Atwater earned his BA from Mars Hill College, an MDiv from the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and an MA in organizational development from Salve Regina College. Since 2006, he has served as senior pastor at Antioch Baptist Church near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and since 2009, he has served as a volunteer chaplain for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Since 2011, Rev. Dr. Joseph Mutashoberwa Bocko has excelled as the director of theAfricanNationalMinistries Programat the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In his position, he coordinates hundreds of African national communities across the United States, which has included six caucuses of West Africans, Southern Africans, Eastern Africans, Ethiopians, Eritreans and South Sudanese. Earlier in his career, Dr. Bocko was a member of the board of directors for the Developing Communities Project, founded by former President Barack Obama, for eight years. Likewise, Dr. Bocko twice served on the National Council of No Child Left Behind on Public Education and Literacy and on the Chicago Development Advisory Council – work that he considers to be ultimate achievements of his career. To prepare for his career, Dr. Bocko received a bachelor’s degree in theological studies fromTumaini University Makumira and anMST from the Wartburg Theological Seminary. Several years later, he received a PhD in educational studies from Trinity International University. Dr. Bocko authored the book “Effective Lay Leadership Training” and is presently working on publishing a second book. He earned the 2008 Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program Award. REV.
