Prior to enlisting, he participated in a cadet program in high school, rising to the position of cadet colonel for the statewide organization in California. Since retiring from the Navy, Mr. Holmes has operated as a consultant for numerous businesses in his local community, and he previously held the position as a member of the Auburn City Council between 2002 and 2014, with two years as Mayor. As part of his vocational journey, he also cultivated a formal education, having earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from San Francisco State University, a Master of Arts in international relations and comparative politics from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and a Master of Public Administration from Golden Gate University. In light of his accomplished military career, Mr. Holmes received numerous honors and decorations, including a Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star Medal with V, a Combat Action Ribbon, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal with a Gold Star, and Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Outside of his military service, he has also demonstrated a sincere passion for civic advocacy, acting as the chair of the Placer County Air Pollution Control District and the vice president of the Placer County Historical Society. To wit, Mr. Holmes was recognized with the McCann Award for Community Service. Mr. Holmes’ family has a storied history of community service, and he is especially proud to have continued that legacy by serving with the Navy and participating with local businesses and organizations. Throughout his career, he has always invited new challenges, and he attributes a great deal of his success to this drive. Looking toward the future, Mr. Holmes hopes to continue his work in developing new opportunities for his community and its citizens. John M. “Mike” Holmes cultivated a fulfilling career honorably serving with the United States Navy between 1963 and 1995.
