While coming of age, she became interested in materials science, whereupon she discovered that there were several problems to study within the field. Deciding to attend higher education, she matriculated in Boston College, from which she received a Bachelor of Science in 1977. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Vanderwalker earned a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981, during which time she studied materials science, particularly within the realm of the transmission electron microscopy of precipitation on dislocation arrays. Subsequent to receiving her doctorate, Dr. Vanderwalker completed a NATO postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University in Oxford, England, in 1982. Shortly thereafter, she was hired by Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York, as an assistant professor in 1983, serving there for three fruitful years. During this time, Dr. Vanderwalker conducted research within her areas of interest and, in light of her laudable achievements, she was bestowed with the first-year faculty Research Award. Notably, Dr. Vanderwalker’s research in this respect was published in a myriad of professional journals. Following her tenure at Stony Brook University, Dr. Vanderwalker joined the staff at the United
