During his tenure, he also twice served as president of the Faculty Senate and was the recipient of the university’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 2009. Alongside his roles at the University of HoustonVictoria, Dr. Ben-Ur served as the senior editor of the Journal of Political Marketing, alongside many other contributions to professional journals and articles. He was twice voted as president of Phi Kappa Phi and has been a co-initiator of the American Marketing Association’s Technology Special Interest Group. Matriculating at the HebrewUniversity of Jerusalem, Dr. Ben-Ur earned a BA in economics in 1974 and an MBA in 1977. He went on to attain a PhD in marketing from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1987. Dr. Ben-Ur’s earliest exposure to marketing was born from the influence of his father, a marketer who was a successful importer of clothing materials for women. After briefly studying mathematics and physics, Dr. Ben-Ur found himself more interested in economics and business. In addition, a book authored by Philip Kotler, an American marketing author, consultant, and professor, steered Dr. BenUr to the field of marketing. He was especially captivated by the idea of relationship marketing, which posits that marketing should be about human relationships and community. Reflecting on his career, Dr. Ben-Ur considers his most notable achievement to be his research on why political marketing and general marketing methodologies should go hand-inhand. Regarding his teaching profession, he is also proud to have developed a smooth process of learning at the undergraduate level and a thinking-oriented direction at the graduate level. Equally gratifying was his active involvement in providing services for the university, noting that students appreciated him for his principles, fairness and friendliness. Renowned for his teaching career of nearly three decades, Dr. Joseph BenUr provided exceptional instruction as a professor of marketing at the University of Houston-Victoria until attaining emeritus status in 2020.
