156 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING Ivar R. Paavola, PE, CDR, is a distinguished figure in the field of engineering. Drawing upon 30 years of professional experience in the structural engineering industry, he retired from the Corps of Engineers in 1989. Alongside this appointment, Mr. Paavola served with the United States Naval Reserve for three decades, at which time he retired at the rank of commander. Supported by an extensive education, Mr. Paavola attended Oregon State University, from which he received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1962. The following year, he earned a master’s degree in structural engineering in 1963. Since retiring from professional work, he worked parttime in the state of Oregon in the engineering sector before easing into a full retirement. In light of his exceptional undertakings in the armed forces, Mr. Paavola earned a Merit Award. Among the myriad of highlights in his career, Mr. Paavola is especially gratified by his experience in spearheading work for navigation locks at the Three Gorges Dam in China, the largest dam in the world, in 1984. In this endeavor, he and his team established five locking mechanisms up and five locking mechanisms down; notably, each lock was 100 feet high. Mr. Paavola is a member of the American Association of Dams and is also well-regarded for his scholarly output. To this end, he is recognized for publishing a paper on basic engineering for a presentation that was conducted in England. He attributes a great deal of his success to his loyalty to his work, as well as his intelligence. Looking forward, he intends to continue enjoying his retirement.
