In his post-retirement years, he has been active as a pro bono consultant to several local organizations. Additionally, Mr. Smith has been on the board of the Newark Symphonic Winds for many years. Attributing much of his success to his faith in God, Mr. Smith has found that the most rewarding aspect of his career has been working alongside his teams and earning the trust of the citizens of Newark. Living and working by Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God,” he would like to continue performing pro bono consulting in the coming years. Ultimately, he aims to be active and involved wherever God would like for him to go. Outside of his career endeavors, Mr. Smith enjoys such avocational activities as golfing, playing the trombone, fishing and barbequing. Demonstrating excellence in the fields of city management and industrial engineering, David W. Smith is presently retired, having served 45 years in his career. After receiving a BBA in industrial management from Michigan Technological University in 1967, he went on to serve as a plant manager for the Ethyl Corporation until 1979. Subsequently, he served as vice president of Oatey from 1979 to 2006. During this time, Mr. Smith was invited to serve as the mayor of Newark, California, a position he first attained in 1978. Impressively, he served in the role for over 30 years until being named mayor emeritus in 2012. Emphasizing that his tenure as mayor has been the ultimate highlight of his career, he was recognized with the City Hall of Newark being named in his honor. Concurrent with his city management position, Mr. Smith also served as the executive director of Ohlone College from 2006 until attaining emeritus status in 2012.
