108 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION MICHAEL J. WALZER TEACHER, COACH Akron Public Schools Akron, OH A distinguished educator for 30 years, Michael J. Walzer first expressed a desire to enter the field of academia during high school. As a senior student, he conducted tutoring sessions at a local Catholic grade school, where he taught third graders. Discovering a newfound love for teaching, he decided to pursue the discipline professionally at college. In 1976, he graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education, allowing him to teach first through eighth grade. Mr. Walzer joined Akron Public Schools in Akron, Ohio, shortly after receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1976. For the following three decades, he excelled as a teacher of mathematics, science and history for fifth through ninth grade, as well as a coach in soccer and track. He ultimately retired in 2006 and lent his expertise to Summit County Schools as a part-time substitute teacher between 2008 and 2019. Outside his primary endeavors, Mr. Walzer has lent his spare time to his community as a poll worker for the Summit County Board of Elections since 2016 and a volunteer for The Mustill Store and Museum since 2012. Previously, he served as a donor for the Kent State Alumni Association and the High School Scholarship Fund. Additionally, he was a volunteer, tour guide and speaker for the History of the Canal program.
