As part of her commitment to her profession, Ms. Kingman remains affiliated with the South Dakota Advisory Council to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. She also served as a board member of the National Association for Bilingual Education and president of the National Indian Education Association. Before beginning her vocational journey, Ms. Kingman pursued a formal education, beginning with her time at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in education in 1962. She subsequently continued her studies at Arizona State University, receiving a Master of Education in 1972. Ms. Kingman ultimately concluded her academic career at Arizona State by completing all the coursework for a PhD in higher education. Well-regarded for her accomplishments, Ms. Kingman has been recognized with numerous accolades and honors throughout her career. She was elected as the recording secretary for the National Congress of American Indians and awarded a fellowship to study policy from George Washington University. She was asked to serve on the Little Big Horn Commission to establish a monument at the battlefield and received the CIPRA Award for her public relations campaign in 1994. Furthermore, Ms. Kingman was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Washington, D.C., in 2009 and a Lifetime Legacy Award in 2013. In 2018, she was honored for being a “phenomenal trailblazing woman and foremother.” With an extensive tribal lineage, Ms. Kingman attributes a great deal of her success to her upbringing, as her parents consistently positively influenced her life and provided her with a strong foundation of culture and service. A proud parent herself, she is especially grateful for the opportunities she has had to complete her collegiate studies while raising her two sons and working. Furthermore, in light of her many accomplishments, she is most gratified to have collaborated with many outstanding leaders and friends. Her family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, remain her priority and heart. In the coming years, Ms. Kingman looks forward to enjoying her continued good health and hopes to write a book recounting the experiences over her 60 years of service.
