He began as an enlisted weapons troop working on B-52s, A-7s, A-10s and in the Air Guard F-100s, separating honorable as a sergeant in 1977. He was commissioned as an officer through ROTC in 1981 and retired in 1998 after 21 years of service. Mr. Placke’s flight experience in the military began as a weapons systems officer, then instructor and flight commander before moving to the Air Staff. As a military aviator, he served with distinction with 11 years of service overseas in Asia and Europe. His staff tours included the 7th Air Force, Air Force International Affairs Office, Pentagon and as director of operations at Officer Training School. Mr. Placke’s civilian flying career began by flying cargo. In 15 months, he progressed from line pilot to ground trainer, flight instructor, check airman and chief pilot. His airline career began with Continental Express. He originally joined in 1999 as a BE-1900D pilot and later EMB145, upgrading to captain. While he continued to fly, he moved up to the training department as an instructor and check airman, training and evaluating pilots beginning in 2011. Mr. Placke attended the University of Arizona, earning a BA in astronomy. He continued his studies at Boston University, receiving an MS in mechanical engineering. He has participated in community and extracurricular activities, including Running Clubs, serving as race director and materials officer. In college, he was the vice president of the university flying club and taught aviation ground school. He still maintains interest in flying with several flying clubs. Additionally, he has been a baseball umpire, assistant scoutmaster and merit badge counselor, soccer coach and adult league softball coach. Taking advantage of many opportunities, he hopes to continue flying with Contour Aviation. Accruing over four decades of experience, Major James T. Placke has cultivated a career of excellence in aviation. His love of flying has carried him from flying in a military tactical aircraft to cargo pilot, regional airline pilot and his most current profession as a corporate pilot.
